Easter Eggs (Or "Fun things to try...")

Here are all the easter eggs that are contained in the Gabriel Knight games. As far as I know, know easter eggs reside in GK2. This was undoubtedly due to severe space limitations near the tail end of its production.

A note of interest to some people, there were definitely extra scenes filmed for GK2, as I remember seeing a games show several years ago by the name of "Bad Influence" in the UK which did a special behind the scenes feature of the making of the game. The show made a big hoo-ha about having their female host filmed in a special segment meant for the game, whereby as Gabriel you could try to hit on her. This probably would have occured in the city square in Munich (you know, the place where you can travel into, which has no discernable purpose).

Anyway, here is a brief introduction to easter eggs for those who haven't got a clue what I've been yabbering on about for the last two paragraphs:

What is an easter egg?

The term "easter eggs" are used to define those special events triggered in some games which are hardcoded by programmers when the user does something unexpected, or triggers the correct sequence of actions.

Why have easter eggs anyway?

From a PR point-of-view, easter eggs are a great way of regenerating interest in an old game title, long after a user has played it to completion. By providing carefully hidden nuggets of triggered events in a game, users will invariably try them out.

How can I discover new easter eggs in the game?

There are two ways. The first involves someone accidentaly trying out a particular type of keyboard/mouse combination which triggers the desired effect. The other involves hacking the game apart on and decrypting the encoding scheme so that all the bitmaps and sound files can be played back independently. Any easter eggs will have extra frames of animation, strange text messages in certain locations, etc.

In other words, its not easy!

Are there any easter eggs in Gabriel Knight 2 : The Beast Within?

As far as anyone has been able to determine, no easter eggs were included on the CD's (this has been verified by an examination of the complete movie listing on all 6 CD's). This is not to say that scenes were never filmed for the game, but rather that they were excluded from the final print of the game, due to space/cost constraints. Who knows, mebbe Sierra will make them available in the (near) future... hint hint! =)

Gabriel Knight 1 Easter Eggs

Now, everyone will have to be patient with me on this one, as I have to scour my tape archives for the email I once received detailing loads of these things. Until then, here are a couple that people have been kind enough to email me with.

Jackson Park - With Mime

Wait until the mime starts following you in Jackson Square. When he starts to follow you, talk (chat) to him. You'll tell him to 'stop following' you or something. Do this about 20 times, and watch Gabriel lose his cool and smack him one! Thanks to Heath Smith.

Tulane University - Notice Board

At Tulane on the bulletin board in the conference room is a notice of a conference with octagenarian Laura Bow-Dorian, the heroine of the Colonel's Bequest and the Dagger of Amon Ra. Thanks to GeeKay3.

Madame Cazaunoux - Front Door

If you go and talk to Madame Cazaunoux before dressing as the priest one of your speaking options is to say "Landshark!" and Madame Cazaunoux will say that you are no Bill Murray. (It pays homage to the old Saturday Night Live skit staring Bill Murray). Thanks to Natalie.

Schloss Ritter - Leaving for Africa

At the start of "Day 8" when you leave Schloss Ritter in the car, hold down the space bar as soon as this scene appears. Te vehicle will have an unfortunate "mishap". By the way, make sure you save your game before you do this, as this particular easter egg will cause the game to end prematurely, you fiend!

Napolean House - Wandering Hands

One of the many charms of GK1 is the incredible richness of the environment that the game creates. How many games can ellicit a response when roving the pickup icon over somebody's derrier? Thanks to Allison.

Voodoo Museum - Wishful Thinking

If Gabriel operates the wishing stump in the museum more than three times, you start to hear some pretty lewd comments about Grace, Malia and "rubbing". Oo-er madam... Thanks to Allison.

Gedde Estate - Wishful Thinking Again!

Gabriel will let his imagination run away with him (again) if you happen to look at the rug on the floor... Thanks to Allison.

St. Georges Rare Books - Good View?

Operating the ladder in the shop will start of one of those razor sharp dialogues that Grace seems to enjoy. Probably because Gabriel always crashes and burns every time... Thanks to Allison.

Church - Confessional Booth

The right confessional is, of course, the secret entrance to the voodoo cartel. The left one, however, is a real confessional. Operate the stand and Gabe will confess some of his sins, which include just how many women he's slept with, and how he feels about not paying Grace. Gabriel also confesses about how he treats Mosely bad and that he's had impure thoughts about a woman he met... Thanks to GeeKay3.

St. Georges Rare Books - Wandering Click Actions

In the shop touch Gracie! Gabriel will briefly describe his frustrations... Thanks to Gregory.

Police Station - Mosely's Office

Most people wait until Day 3 when Mosely tells Gabe about the interview with Crash to return the badge, at which time Mosely seriously gets in Gabe's case about "borrowing" his badge. Well, go to the station on Day 2 after talking with Malia (and getting thrown out). Mosely will say how he had a photo with the Chief. Mosely knows he used it to impress a woman, but Gabriel doesn't apologize due to an incident involving Mosely "borrowing" Gabe's bike while it was in front of the store... Thanks to GeeKay3.
