Chapter One

Everything was dark and not a thing could be seen. Grace wandered through this expanse of nothingness as black fog swirled around her ankles and entered her nostrils, making her cough from the foul odor of decay. This place, she knew not what it was but it terrified her and made a chill go up her spine. Occasionally she'd hear strange noises which would make her head jerk in the direction the noise came from. She was wearing a long, flowing white silk gown that would make her thrilled to wear under any other circumstances, and she was barefoot. Strangely enough, she could feel no sign of a floor under her feet. She shivered nervously and hugged herself to stay warm as she walked.
Eventually, a black trenchcoat-clad figure appeared in the distance. Grace's eyes widened and her lips raised into a smile of relief as she saw who it was and began to run towards him.
"GABRIEL!!!" she cried. "Oh God Gabriel, you scared me disappearing like that!!"
"I know, Gracie," he said. "I'm really sorry."
Grace rushed into his arms and hugged him tightly, closing her eyes.
"It's okay Gabe. Everything'll be okay now, you're back...we'll figure this out together..." she murmured.
She felt Gabriel's hand lightly running down her cheek and she smiled happily. This was what she had wanted after all, she was destined to be with him. Gabriel's hand traced down her cheek and stopped at her chin, pulling her head away from his chest and tilting it upwards. Before she could even open her eyes again, she felt Gabriel's cool, moist lips pressing against hers in a deep, passionate kiss. In under a second she was returning the kiss as furiously as Gabriel had started it. Soon, Gabriel's arm was wrapped around her waist and his hand was running through her hair, pulling her towards him.
Her fingers moved up to his chest to touch the Ritter Talisman but closed around thin air. Grace opened her eyes, an expression of worry crossing her face, and pulled away from Gabriel, stepping back.
"Gabe..." she said warily. "Where's your Talisman...?"
Gabriel now stood with his eyes closed and his hands together, almost as if in prayer. He didn't even flinch at Grace's comment and acted as if he hadn't heard. her. Grace's eyebrows furled in thought; she couldn't understand what was wrong with Gabriel.
"Gabriel.." she said a bit louder. "Where is your talisman?"
Gabriel still didn't answer. He simply stood there, frozen in that position like a living statue. Grace stepped up to him and grabbed him by his shoulders, shaking him hard.
"GABRIEL!!" she yelled. "SNAP OUT OF IT!!"
She felt the back of Gabriel's hand slap hard across her face, knocking her to the floor. A stinging pain eminated from her left cheek and her lips; he had drawn blood. As if this news was not enough, her right forearm (on which she had landed) sent searing crackles of agony up her arm, through her shoulder, and straight into her senses. She tried to scream in pain, but no sound came out at all. She looked up at Gabriel with pleading eyes, but what she saw when she looked at him made her gasp. The man standing over her was not Gabriel. He had Gabriel's body, Gabriel's face, Gabriel's clothes....but he wasn't Gabriel. His eyes were pitch black all the way through and nothing reflected from them. It was as if someone had replaced his eyes with black spheres. This "Gabriel" grinned maliciously at her and the eerieness of such evil on a face she knew so well made her cry out.
"Who are you?" she managed to choke out.
"Now that...is of no importance yet...Miss Nakimura..." he answered in a voice quite different from Gabriel's. He laughed wickedly and added "But...think of me...think of that kiss...every single time you look at Gabriel from this day forth...and feel pain..."
His voice was deeper, more elegant, and he breathed his words out like thin air at a tone like a whisper. It was a very enticing voice, and Grace almost wished Gabriel's voice was really like that for a second.
The Gabriel imposter pulled the Shattenjäger dagger out from a hidden trenchcoat pocket and ran the dull part of the blade across the palm of his other hand, smiling viciously. Grace tried to scamper back away from him, but as soon as her right hand came in contact with the mysterious ground, shockwaves of pain spiraled from her forearm up through her body and she screamed in pain, her arm giving out under her. As she fell, she saw the Gabriel imposter kneel down beside her and pass the blade over the air above her once, twice, thrice. He smiled wickedly and looked deep into her eyes.
"Relax..Miss Nakimura.." he spoke gently, with a definate shock of malice. "You are going to be here for a long...long...time..."
Grace was in too much shock to speak anymore. Her foreheaded was beaded with sweat, her skin was extremely pale, and her lips were beginning to tinge with blue. Blood pounded through her veins and raced to her forearm, which was already extremely swelled and turning blue and purple. She could barely remain conscious, but she couldn't faint either. In all essence, Grace was stuck here.
The imposter Gabriel placed the sharp edge of the dagger blade on Grace's right forearm and pressed down hard, dragging it very slowly across her broken arm. Grace screamed uncontrollably, barely able to believe that such a scream could issue from her lungs. The white fabric of her dress was quickly beginning to stain with blood and this would have been enough torture for her, but he kept on dragging the blade down her arm and she kept on screaming in extreme pain. She could no longer feel, hear, or see anything except the pain in her broken and bleeding arm. She was running out of air but her body wouldn't stop making her scream, such was her pain. Tears poured down her cheeks as she screamed. "Ah, but...what fun would that be..?" he asked, grinning at her and laughing maniacally, his laughter echoing throughought the vast expanse.

"Grace, vake up, vake up!!!" Gerde cried in vain as she held Grace's shoulders pinned down on her bed in Schloss Ritter. "Grace, please, vake up!!!"
Grace had gone into severe shock from seeing Gabriel bound off like that the night before. Gerde hadn't thought it was this serious, but in the middle of the night Grace had quickly developed a fever and lapsed into unconsciousness. She hadn't awakened since, and now she was convulsing in her bed, screaming as if someone were torturing her. The resident doctor in Rittersburg was standing beside the bed injecting some sort of serum into Grace's arm as Gerde held her down. They waited a few moments and Grace stopped screaming, but she continued twitching in pain as Gerde looked on helplessly.
(**I don't exactly speak German...so the following conversation is translated into English for your convenience and mine**)
"What do I do now?" she asked the doctor in flawless German. "She could go into a coma, or even die."
"Yes, she could," he stated. "You must call the hospital in Munich, they have more elaborate equipment there and more knowledgeable staff. Maybe they can help Miss Nakimura."
"I think you're right...I'll do that."
"Oh and another thing.."
"Yes?"
"What caused this traumatic shock she's experiencing? It must have been something terrible."
"Oh no...it's a long story Herr Doctor...I shall explain it to you later, I promise. Right now, my biggest concern is Grace's well being."
"Very well then, I shall be on my way."
"Goodbye, Herr Doctor."
The doctor exited the room and his footsteps could be heard going down the staircases and eventually out the door. Gerde sat down in a chair next Grace and took hold of her hand.
"Gabriel vill be all right," she murmured to Grace, hoping that she could somehow hear her. "I promise you Grace, he vill be back...just hold on...don't leave us yet...he vill be back..."
