Chapter One

Gabriel, Arin, Gerde and Schultzie were in the castle in Rittersberg. Everything had been quiet since the day the talisman was lost in the earth with Allaria. That was a year ago now. They had been living peacefully, no interuptions and no calls for a schattenjäger...yet. Arin had been working with a local theater in Munich and did show productions every once and a while. She made Gabriel go to each and every one of them. He was even in one, the back end of a horse. Reluctantly; Arin had forced him. Since the vampire case Gabriel had written another book, entitled 'The Last Temptation of Blake Backlash'. It had actually been selling well; it doubled 'The Voodoo Murders' sales. Needless to say, they were all amazed.
Gerde and Schultzie were still hapily married and living in the Schloss Ritter castle. Schultzie was still trying to get Gabriel to wear the traditional German clotheing and Gabriel's reply was always the same. "I will NOT look like a little German leprechaun!" Sooner or later Schultzie gave up. Gerde was now two months pregnant...looks like her and Schultzie got a little busy.
Soriya had gone back to Brazil. She and Arin still kept in touch. They e-mailed each other over the internet and chatted online. Arin called her every once in a while while Gabriel was gone, so he wouldnt yell at her about the phone bills. Soriya lived with Manuel, who had her busy researching things for the Manos Del Sol (inside joke about monkeys, lalala). She occupied herself by trying to get the world's largest Bush picture collection (haha, another inside joke, nyah) and practicing her drums for the band she and Arin had hoped to start one day.
No one knew exactly what happened to Gregor. They guessed he had a big garage sale and sold all of Allaria and Katrina's stuff.
Rocky ended up leaving Bruno for broadway. He starred in a spoof of "the Rocky Horror Picture Show". The show went on longer then Cats. Bruno wished Rocky wouldnt have left him. He continued working at his hair styling and annoying Grace, who was at the bookstore next door.
Grace went back to the bookshop after things had quieted down in Rittersberg. She dealt with all of Gabriel's fans who came to the bookstore to "catch a glimpse of him". She still waited for Gabriel's call for her assistance, which she could feel coming soon. Mosely still hung out around the bookshop trying to get dates with Grace and always got turned down. Books in the shop were selling and business was going well.
Dr. Karin was run over by a truckload of run away lab monkeys while crossing the street to a 7-11 for cigarettes (hah! Another inside joke!).
Gabriel's family Banshee still visited him every once in a while to warn Gabriel about things, give him advice and tell him to buy Arin new purple hiking boots.
Meanwhile, at the snowy peaks of a mountain range far, far away, Zack was laying on a pile of straw. His body was swollen and bruised, and even his hair hurt. He had been caned wearing nothing but a t-shirt and shorts standing out in the freezing cold for speaking. Stupid monks, they had made him take a vow of silence. He couldn't even move and he could barely swallow.

And this brings us up to present day.

"ARIN! Where is my brush?!" Gabriel yelled frantically from his room to Arin. He was searching his dresser for it. Arin looked around guiltily from the next room and put his brush in her dresser drawer.
"I dont have it Gabe!!" Arin yelled back.
"Yes you do Arin!" Gerde called to the both of them, not wanting them to go into war. Arin huffed and Gabriel stomped into her room.
"Gimmie my brush!" Gabriel yelled again.
Arin smiled sweetly, got the brush out and handed it to him. He grabbed it and walked out of the room, running his hand through his hair. He lay down on his bed and stared at the ceiling for a while, and then he walked down stairs where the TV was on. It was some German TV show, then suddenly a news flash came up. Arin translated it to English for Gabriel, since he still hadnt caught on, after two years.
"Mysterious killings in the rain forests of Indonesia, thought to be the work of cultists. Possibly the Ancient people of Dani. Families are being killed and people are thinking of it as some kind of game. Here are some thoughts from the families of the victims," Arin translated. The TV showed some families of the victims.
"Thats strange.." Gabriel trailed off. The phone rang and Gabriel picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Bonsoir Monsieur Knight...or is it Ritter? Well, in any case, you are the Schattenjäger, is this correct?" A female voice, with a slight French accent, asked.
"Its Knight....and yes I am The Schattenjäger," he answered, unsure as to why someone would be calling him this late in the evening.
"Ah, all right. My name is Leila des Perdu, I'm calling from France. I am what you could call your French counterpart, another shadow hunter, but here they have always been female. I knew your granduncle, Wolfgang. He was a good friend of my mother's. He contacted me last night and said to call you about the killings in Indonesia..."
"Contacted you?" Gabriel was confused; a common thing.
"Yes, unlike the schattenjägers, we were not given a talisman when our order was started, but in return we were given certain...powers. One of them is the ability to speak with the dead, it is amazingly helpful in murder cases. Your grand uncle contacted me last night saying that we were both in great danger and that these killings had something to do with your talisman, but he knows not what. This is all I know, Monsieur Knight, and I can fly over to Germany if the need arises."
"Ok....well....um...I really dont know what to say. We dont have the talisman, it was lost in our last case and I dont know where to begin."
"Hmm, that is very bad then. Wolfgang said that you were in danger and kept stressing the talisman. I was not aware that you had lost it. Perhaps.....perhaps this whole thing is happening *because* you lost it, non? Maybe that is why Wolfgang stressed so much about it....Monsieur Knight, if this is as serious as I think, I may need to fly over to Germany..."
"I guess its possible. Um.....you can stay here at the castle with my sister and I if you'd like.."
"All right...I can be there in a matter of hours, I have a few friends at the airport that can get me a ticket for a flight that departs soon, and there isn't much I need to pack. If it is not too much trouble, would that be all right for you Monsieur Knight? I could take a cab to Schloss Ritter, Wolfgang has shown me around it before so I know where it is."
" 'S not a problem. I guess I'll see you in a couple hours then?"
"Oui, Monsieur Knight. Until then, adieu," she said and hung up the phone. Gabriel set the phone down into the cradle and sat back on the couch.
"Who was that Gabe?" Arin asked.
"Leila. She knew Uncle Wolfgang. She said were all in trouble. It has something to do with those killings and the talisman. She's coming down here and staying at the castle."
"She?" Arin rolled her eyes. "Have we forgotten what happened with the last two girls that just showed up? Ahem, Malia....Katerina..."
"Oh shut up Arin, you're starting to sound like Gracie!" Gabriel said in annoyance. Arin sneered and went up to her room, while Gabriel continued to watch TV and then laid down; he was tired. A couple hours later Gerde knocked on his door.
"Gabriel, there is someone here by the name of Leila Des Perdu," she said.
"I'll be down in a minute," Gabriel answered.
He sat up and looked in the mirror, ran a hand through his hair and straightened his shirt, then walked downstairs. Leila was seated at the couch waiting for him to come down. She had long wavy black hair that came down to her waist, forest green eyes, flawless, pale skin, and she was only a little shorter then Gabriel. She wore laced black leather shoes, black jeans, a gold satin victorian dress shirt, and a black leather vest, silver dagger earrings and a claw ring.
"Hi, You must be Leila," he said.
"Oui, I am. You are Monsieur Knight I assume?" she answered.
"Yes I am, Gabriel Knight."
They shook hands.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Monsieur Knight. Wolfgang told me very little about you, he only called to tell me goodbye before he left for the snake mound and to say that the castle was in your hands now."
"Yes, the castle is mine now. And the talisman he died for...is gone."
Gabriel turned a little red in the face and coughed. He didnt want to show any emotion.
"There has to be a way to get it again, Monsieur Knight, relics like those are not easily lost. Now, if you could please show me to my room...I am not used to flying cross country on such short notice and I am quite tired from the trip..."
"I could show you to the guestroom if you'd like," he said, trying to sound like a gentleman, and put out his hand to help her up from the couch.
"All right...thank you Monsieur Knight."
She smiled and took his hand. He led her up to the guest bedroom. He said goodnight and let her get her rest. He was tired himself and headed back to his bedroom, deciding he'd give Gerde and Arin the details the next morning.
Meanwhile, at the snowy peaks of a mountain range far, far away, Zack was still laying on the pile of straw. Two monks dressed in red robes with shaved heads walked in and set a bowl of tofu soup in front of Zack. If his throat hadn't been so swollen he would've gagged. One monk looked at the other. Who brought this kid here? he asked telepathically. I dunno, the other one said. I think he got sent here by his father. Poor kid, his father must really hate him.
"Hey, guys.." Zack managed to croak out. "Could you...get me..a blanket...or something..?"
The two monks' eyes widened and they frowned.
"Oh no...oh no, oh no, I just talked..." he choked out. "Oh god..."
The two monks picked him roughly up by his arms, making him wince, and dragged him outside into the cold, still wearing nothing but a t-shirt and shorts. The high priest walked up to Zack and frowned in disapproval. Zack, young one of the Western World, again this evil causes you to break your vows and speak through your mouth instead of your mind. We must beat this evil out of you, so that you can become one with the Zen, he said telepathically.
Unfortunately, Zack was too bruised and beaten to hear him, although all the other monks weren't. Zack fell to the ground as they let him go and pulled out the imported bamboo canes.
"MOOMMMYYYYYYYY!!!!!" Zack yelled as they began lashing him.
His screams echoed throughout the mountaintops and caused many avalanches, one of which killed the Yeti.
