Chapter Two
It was dark, even though it was near midday. But the sunlight couldn't penetrate the thick leaves. She looked up as she travelled down the narrow path, pulling her cloak closer to her. This place always gave her the creeps.
The clearing would be just ahead now.
She stepped inside. Instantly, she felt cold steel against her throat.
"Password?" a voice growled.
"All these years we do wait
Until we shall meet fate.
Revenge shall be ours some days soon
As sure as there is a nightly moon." she recited quickly.
The knife dropped, and she was led into the dark tent at one end of the clearing. She pulled aside the flap and entered, seating herself and accepting a glass of an amber liquid.
"Ah," said the other in the room, "how good of you to come."
She nodded, sipping the liquid. She didn't recognize it. "You're the one doing the murders near here, aren't you." She said it as a fact, not a question. There was no doubt.
The firelight danced off the other's yellow eyes. "Yes."
She took another sip. "Why?"
The other growled. "You know. I *must* have the talisman. The killings will bring the Schattenjagers here, and we will take it from them."
"We?"
"Yes, Mirani. You will bring them here, and we will take it from them."
Mirani nodded absently. "What's in it for me?"
The other's yellow eyes glinted again, an evil smile forming.
Arin eyed Leila as she sat down at the breakfast, looking the french woman over. Gabriel pretended that he didn't see. Gerde came in, eyeing Leila too, then looking to Gabriel.
"Why must you women drive me crazy?!" he asked. All eyes turned to him, eyebrows rising. "Umm...I mean..." He sighed again, and went back to breakfast.
Arin snickered, then lent over and ruffled her brother's hair.
"Hey!" Gabriel grabbed for his brush which was situated handily nearby, and quickly straightened up his hair.
Arin eyed him. "You still haven't cut your hair."
"Arin! Now you *really* sound like Gracie!"
Leila took this all in stride, finishing her breakfast and wiping her
mouth daintily on her napkin. Then she looked expectantly at Gabriel.
Gabe swallowed his mouthful of food. "Leila says she contacted Wolfgang and that he said we were in great danger. He also said that the talisman was related to the killings in Indonesia."
"Oui," said Leila. "perhaps it is because you lost the talisman."
"The TV said the killings were cultists," replied Arin, "I don't see the connection."
"Well, Wolfgang was adament," replied Leila.
"We should probably go check it out," said Gabriel. Arin nodded. "I'll call Gracie and ask her to fly over here and come with us. She can leave the bookstore with Mosely or someone. Gerde, you'll watch here, won't you?"
Gerde nodded her consent, then left to see to the kitchen.
"You still haven't cut your hair," greeted Gracie as she stepped off the plane to where Arin, Gabriel, and Leila were waiting with carry-on bags.
Gabriel sighed. "Come on, we have to catch our plane."
"I expect to be told what's going on," said Gracie as she fell into step beside him as they started off for their next gate.
"Sure, on the plane. By the way, who's watching St. George?"
"Mosely. I had to promise him 'something special' when I got back. Knowing him..." Gracie shook her head. Gabriel chuckled.
Arin lagged a few steps behind the other three, the hairs on her neck crawling. She felt for sure that they were being watched...
