Results of the Unofficial Fan Fiction Contest!

At long last! Here are the final standings for the votes awarded to the stories for the unofficial fan fiction contest, held over the last couple of months!

Before I dissect each of the following sections, and give commentary on some personal observations, I wish to point out that out of the total number of votes cast for each story, only a small fraction had to be nullified.

Nullification occurred when it was blatantly obvious that the same individual was voting for a particular piece of fan-fiction, repeatedly over many days (sometimes hours).

Anyway, as I said, only a small fraction of votes had to be discounted because of this, leaving the overall table slightly modified.

Winners selected where also assessed on the basis of whether they had previously won a category, or not. This was to ensure a fairer "spread" of possible prizes among all fans.

For those out there who like to munch over statistical information, here is a breakdown of all votes cast in all categories, both before, and after, adjustments made to nullified votes:

Statistical Breakdown of Unofficial Fan Fiction Contest
As of 18:00 - 26th September 1997
Before After
"Ms. Jensen would be proud of you!" 98 votes 93 votes
"Most realistic story" 35 votes 33 votes
"Best character development" 40 votes 38 votes
"Most romantic story" 26 votes 25 votes
"Most humorous story" 60 votes 59 votes
Overall Total 259 votes 248 votes

Ok, lets announce the winners!

"Most realistic story"
Winner # of Votes (Out of a total of 33) Share of vote (Percentage)
The Dread Pirate Roberts - Chem 4 votes 12 %

After a slight adjustment in the way of votes (and the fact that geekay3 would be the winner of this, and two other categories anyway!), Chem's "Dread Pirate Roberts" wound up in second place, thus earning it the the prize for being awarded the accolade of "Most realistic story". Well done!

"Best character development"
Winner # of Votes (Out of a total of 38) Share of vote (Percentage)
Ascension - Heath Smith 4 votes 11 %

Heath's effort (yep, he of the "Gabe's Faves" site) placed it directly after "Prelude to a Nightmare" in this category, earning him the prize. It would have been "Strong Man", if not for the over-zealous voting action of one individual! Still, Heath wrote both of them anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered much! Well done!

"Most romantic story"
Winner # of Votes (Out of a total of 25) Share of vote (Percentage)
Bittersweet Sins - Carl Creighton 8 votes 32 %

Carl's effort earned him a number one place, thus picking up the award and prize here! Well done!

"Most humorous story"
Winner # of Votes (Out of a total of 59) Share of vote (Percentage)
The Pimp Within - Carlos DaSilva 15 votes 25 %

Another "Gabe's Faves" site owner! In a supreme effort which proves that raunch and violence pays, Carlos' satirical take on the GK universe proved to be popular enough to scoop him both 1st place award and prize. Well done! A special note should be made that Carl's other effort, "GK1 Gone Crazy" did match "Pimp Within" neck-and-neck for a while, until a few hours ago!

"Ms. Jensen would be proud of you!"
"Most realistic story"
"Best character development"
Winner # of Votes (Out of a total of 93) Share of vote (Percentage)
Prelude to a Nightmare - geekay3 17 votes 18 %

And finally! A very deserved "well done" to geekay3 for creating a story which managed to top 3 out of the total 5 categories! The margins between other entries were significant enough for "Prelude to a Nightmare" to be recognised as the fans overall favorite.

Wrap-Up

Winners will be contacted shortly about how they will be able to receive their prizes, so watch out for that email!

And that's about it really. Thanks for everyone who took part in the voting process, and especially huge thanks go out to every single author of all GK fan fiction. Without you, this page wouldn't exist.

Also, I wish to acknowledge "scrounger extraordinaire" - Hendley (ala "The Great Escape") for coming up with the prizes (you know who you are!). Thanks for your support!

Finally, thanks go to the one person who started this crazy thing - Jasper. You inspired a jihad or fan writing, which I hope will continue!

Remember to keep your stories coming, as the voting system will always be running! And it will always be an honour and a pleasure to host them here.

Ray.
