Gabriel Knight 3 - Story Almost Completed

10th May 1997

Some more information about the forthcoming and highly anticipated Gabriel Knight 3. This is a reply from Jane Jensen regarding issues about casting details, early information restrictions, 3D related discussion in relation to the game.

"Seriously, those two things [setting and the ‘evil force’,] are what we plan to 'reveal' on the web page and with the exclusive CGW (Computer Gaming World) preview. So I can't tell. As for the voices you can say this; that we want to keep as much continuity as we can between and GK3 and GK1 and [GK] 2. However, we have not reached the point in production where we have begun to think seriously about casting, nor have we spoken to any of the actors about availability or interest. That will probably begin by July."

"It won't be much longer! We're trying to finalize the plans for an exclusive press leak at some point this summer. After that, we'll be on the web and it will all be fair game. As for production, the team will be the Shivers team and they have just shipped Shivers II and are getting started on GK3. The first part of the design has been given to them and the second part is due for completion by the end of April. The story is therefore nearly done, but we'll probably be adding some additional 3D puzzles and sequences once we begin to build the 3D environment."

Everyone on the team, including myself, is very psyched about getting started and getting visuals up.

The rumor about the Pentium 200 [as a minimum] is beyond me. We have not even begun to discuss requirements yet -- we're far from that. GK3 will be coming out sometime late summer/early fall '98, but we won't have a firmer date until we're further into development.

As for a mature rating -- I imagine it will be similar in language and sexual situations to #2 (maybe a tad more sex) and probably a little more violence. Who knows what the board will make of it -- they surprised me on #2.

So there you have it, any information about GK3 is going to be very limited until Computer Gaming World have their exclusive preview published. The official Sierra GK3 web site will probably follow very closely either before or after that happens, with promsies of screenshots of the 3D engine in action, and perhaps downloadable prototypes to allay peoples fears about how well it will work with the latest installment.

The issue regarding continuity is interesting in that it beggars the question of who will they use to voice the characters? Will they go back to roots and use the skills of those in GK1 (Curry, Dorn et al.), GK2 (Erickson, Takahashi et al.), plump for "sound-a-likes", recast everyone, or perhaps create an amalgam of all four possibilities?

Perhaps most surprising of all is not even a whiff of official information about what the storyline is going to be about. Vampires, the return of Von Glower, Brazillian Shadow Hunters, and Witchcraft shouldn't be ruled out... =)

Thanks to Andy Bellati, Alexander Seitz and Walt Conger for supplying this top info, via their newsletter!

Gabriel Knight - The Beast Within, The Novel

10th May 1997

With interest in Gabriel Knight still rising high after the release of the novelisation of Sins of the Fathers, expect to see the novel version of GK2 in a few months. Alas, we in the UK are still without even the first installment =(. More info on UK availability when I receive it.

Gabriel Knight - The Dark Soundtrack

10th May 1997

With news that Sierra's Quest For Glory V will have a special audio CD soundtrack available, fans have expressed interest in something similar for fans of Gabriel Knight.

Robert Holmes composed the haunting scores used in both GK1 and GK2, and his orchestral pieces would make perfect listening if pressed onto a CD.

If you want to express similar sentiments, why not send a message to suggestions@sierra.com and let them know what you think. It will happen if enough people tell them.

In the interim you can find MIDI files from GK1 and digitised samples frmo GK2 of all the musical scenes on this very site.

GK3 - Minimum Spec = Supercomputer?

10th May 1997

Some news that I have found out regarding what will be the minimum specification required to play forthcoming Sierra titles.

As with any game that is being developed, good programmers will always try to push the technology a little further to make the eventual release of the game appear technically brilliant at the time of its eventual release. Of course, such development comes with a price, and this will probably be in the form of upgrading your PC computer hardware to a level which which will allow you to play it acceptably under Windows 95.

This will be in the form of CPU upgrades (fast pentiums only need apply, possibly MMX compliant), Memory increase (greater than 32mb?) and unprecedented levels of of free disk space. Of course the final product may well be optimised enough for some machines which users currently have, but as with most game titles out there already, more=better=smoother=faster=enjoyable.
