Saignes - Hoax?

21st August 1997

Were there any clues on that page? Thanks to Fred for sending this in:

I warn you in advance: There's nothing on that page that could relate on a mystery (and I'd think that if a fairly well-known mystery is located there, it would have been mentionned on the page, being a page on tourist attraction of SAIGNES and nearby). In fact, when it was mentionned on your website that Saignes was a town name, I've look on the net and got that very same page.

The more interesting things about that page is an ancient church and a medieval village.

Well, it still can be it, but I wouldn't bet much on this...

Saignes On The Web

21st August 1997

Although there is still no official information from Sierra about what the exact location of the game will be, all things point to somewhere in France. The ever-resourceful Andrea Carbert has been able to hunt down a site which contains some information:

Tourism in France - Directory - SAIGNES (15)

If anyone can translate it for, I'd appreciate it!

GK3 - Gamesmania Interview

19th August 1997

The following Q&A came from Gamesmania:

Q: Is Jane Jensen in charge of GK3?
A: Jane Jensen is still the mind behind the Gabriel Knight series. She's the writer/designer for this installment, and as with the previous two, wrote the entire script.

Q: First voodoo murders, then werewolves, what's number three about?
A: This is still a secret. It seems at this stage that contemporary European politics play a significant role, just as history did in GK2. A horrible secret from the village's history is the key point. The story is based on an actual incident, but Jane Jensen isn't specifying what incident yet.

Q: Where does this one take place?
A: Location has always been an important part of the series, but this is a secret too. Sierra can't tell us anything more than "a small European Village."

Q: Will this one use Full Motion Video?
A: No. This edition will be a real-time 3D game.

Q: Who will do the voice of Gabriel Knight?
A: Casting is still to be determined. The leaning is to recast Dean Erickson and Joanne Takahashi, who played Gabriel and Grace in GK2. Eric Twelker tells us that Jane Jensen will consider them if they are available.

Q: Do we get to play both Gabriel and Grace?
A: Yes. Q: Will this game be Chapter-based?
A: Uncertain. What is known is that the game will occur in real-time, so things will happen around Gabriel and Grace. There will be a main-patch to the story and "side-quests," or subplots...

Q: Will we get to play with Gabriel Knight's tape recorder again?
A: Unknown.

GK3 is slowly permeating the gaming sites:

GK3 - Jane Jensen Speaks!

18th August 1997

The following was collated and sent to me by Ray Yamka, Jr.:

"On the message board at the Sierra site, Jane Jensen has made a few posts. The following are some of the excerpts:

Hey, all. How's it hangin'? Thanks for all the feedback on the new GK3 pages.

I've seen it mentioned a few times that if you want to know what GK3 looks like play Shivers II. I wanted to point out that the GK3 engine (G-engine) is NOT the Shivers II engine. First, Shivers II was not real time but pre-rendered, and you could only 'move' the camera (I believe haven't played it) minimally. In contrast, everything in GK3, backgrounds, characters, etc. will be REAL TIME, meaning generated on the fly so that you can move the camera 100%. The AVI fly through at the train station, for example, was not a pre-rendered movie, but an example of how you'll actually be able to move the camera in the game under your own control of course and wherever you wish. This means that during dialogue between two characters (for instance) you can zoom up to one to look in the eyes or look behind their back to see if their fingers are crossed or peek in their pocket or whatever. Shivers II is actually nothing at all like GK3 neither in engine, story, art, setting, puzzles, etc.

Just wanted to clarify before I start seeing people post Shivers II shots as 'what GK3 will be like' images!

Jane

and...

RE: default camera angles. Yes! This is one of the fun things we're working out. In each 'room' there'll be 3-5 default camera angles which you can get by clicking on 'camera 1-5' on the interface. These will 'show' you the whole room so that if you get your camera in a tough spot or just have a slow machine you can zip around quickly.

Then, for 'scenes' such as talking to the desk clerk, another 3-4 camera buttons will appear that have shots JUST FOR THAT SCENE, like an over the shoulder of the clerk on Gabe, etc. so that you can get these nice angles during the dialogue (or go out to room views with the other buttons for that 'Hitchcock effect'. You'll be able to jump to any of the default camera positions at will or move the camera with the keypad or mouse any time.

Very exciting for someone who's always worked with a static or forced camera before (i.e. me).

Jane

and

Don't want to say too much about this yet but, yes, there'll be icons i.e. more than one. In fact, there'll be more than GK1 overall.

In general, I think GK3 is more of a return to GK1, at least in turns of interactivity level and puzzles.

and finally...

There will be no video in GK3, but there will be more 'scenes' around time changes.

It would seem that the camera technology would be the thing to look for in this new game.

GK3 - Even More Storyline Clues

18th August 1997

Something for people to try for themselves, supplied by Jay Prychidny.

"If you subject the artsy shot of gabe (You know, with sunrise, Ca seignes, etc.) to a number of harsh filters you may just be lucky enough to spot "Les" in or around Gabe's belt. Les, as probably everyone knows, is the plural form of "The" in french. Strangely, I can't find any words after "The" (e.g."The game's plotline is about the search for vampires in a rural town in france"). Well... I guess this will help reinforce the fact (and I will call it a FACT) that GK3 takes place in France."

Thanks for that feed Jay, the clues are certainly getting stronger and stronger as the seconds tick by!.

GK3 - Even More Storyline Clues

18th August 1997

Plenty of info today, the first piece from Arseny Lebedev:

"I noticed that it said some thing next to "sunrise" it says "line" "sunrise line" I have a feeling that that grid is a map."

Another very promising piece of information came from Andrea Carbert:

"As you may know, in one of the GK pics when you invert the colours, you see the words 'ça'(there) and 'saignes'(no translation). These words are french, but I could not make sense of them. Then, I looked in an atlas and saw that there is a town in France called Saignes, located in the Cantal region. Could this possibly the location for GK3? Maybe this is Sierra's way of saying "there in Saignes"."

Looks promising, doesn't it folks? This final bit is really some speculation about what the mystery could be all about. It was sent to me by Fred:

"So here's my new hypothesis... I was thinking about Fatima, the small rural town where the blessed Virgin appeared regularly to three young children. Just to satisfy my curiosity, I've checked on the Internet what I could see. I was surprised of the result, so I thought it worth sharing. First, Fatima is in Portugal. I think it would explain the spanish feeling we have looking the trailer. Second, Fatima is really a small rural town surrounded by mountain. Third, it would explains why there is tourist visiting a small rural town. Fourth, the most surprising: Look at the house of Fatima I've found on the net, they look quite familiar...

Jane Jensen said in her interview that the city was either the site of a Great Enigma, or of a Great Scam, depending on your level of belief. Geez, I think that could be it!! As for the french we found on the various image, they could be portugese: the 2 langages are highly similar!

The only things I could think opposing this theory is the religious aspect of such a subject. I think it is highly risked to use such a subject! (Whether Jensen made the apparition true or false, there will be unhappy people calling to blaspheme). Furthermore, the subject may seem quite boring. For example, my girlfriend on hearing I think Fatima was the subject of the game was quite pessimist over the appeal of such a game... On this I disagree with her.

I do not if you are familiar with this enigma. In big, here's the mystery: In the early 1920, The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young sheperd of Fatima, talked to them and told them where to meet again. They met several time. This is not a simple case of seeing the Virgin Mary because she revealed to the three children three secrets (the famous three secret of Fatima). The children kept the secret but told 2 of them to the church. (the third secret being far too much important to tell a simple man). The pastor, seeing the importance of these secret, met with the pope to tell him. The pope kept the secret to himself, telling only his succedor. The 2 first secrets are known to the public, but the third is well kept by the church, despite the pression of many group of people. The secret was supposed to be revealed in 1960, but the pope delayed the date and said that it would probably stay a secret forever. Today, there is only 2 person who knows the secret: the pope Jean-Paul II and Lucy, the last survivor of the three childrens bearing the secret of Fatima. If you want to know more about Fatima, go to http://www.fatima.org , they have it all! (even a virtual tour of the town).

I think there would be much speculation to do on this secret and there could be political issue to consider (depending what the secret is), so it could in my opinion provide the hell of a great story for Gabriel Knight...

Heck, I could be all wrong about this, but I think this is a credible option..."

Well I certainly think so, you've certainly done your homework on this one! To people who haven't read the last bit of news, go and do so! Loads of things related to GK3 there...
